If it involves goals, planning, and helping you live out your supermom dreams without compromising your time, energy, or family connection, then I'm betting we have a lot to talk about.
Stay Committed to How You Plan To Show Up for Yourself
This post will help you understand how planning ahead creates more time and freedom for ambitious moms and becomes an essential part of your personal growth strategy.
I know how hard you’re trying to make everything work for you and your family—I’ve been there. You might find yourself handling responsibilities day by day, unsure what tomorrow will bring. Or perhaps you occasionally stumble upon precious free time, only to watch it slip away because you weren’t prepared to use it well. When you’re winging it each day, your schedule often becomes scattered and chaotic.
The antidote to feeling unfocused, disorganized, uncertain, and battling ‘mom brain’ is planning – the true key to freedom for ambitious moms.
Yes, planning takes time—I hear you. You might be thinking, “If I had time to plan, I wouldn’t be reading this!” Though it seems counterintuitive, planning actually opens up your time and gives you more energy and resources in return.
I want more than just seeing you survive each day meeting everyone’s basic needs. I want you to thrive and feel confident. I want you to break free from constant decision-making and feel empowered to nurture your individuality while managing family time.
It’s time to embrace planning so you can achieve your goals and create systems that make success possible.
As a scientist, running experiments—especially biological ones—has been like a fast track to mastering personal development skills in executive functioning and planning. Although we follow protocols with stepwise instructions, there’s still extensive planning involved.
You can’t simply show up on experiment day and expect success.
I must consider resources in advance:
There’s no avoiding those inconvenient times, like early morning checks. Plus, I’m usually running multiple experiments simultaneously, which demands even more careful planning.
With planning, I can structure my day to support and prepare for my upcoming work.
This parallels consulting projects, where you must plan both team time and project tasks. The more I practice planning, the better I become at it, both in the lab and in consulting. In research, where failure points abound, proper planning is essential for success.
If we think of our lives as the most important experiments—and our families as our best research collaborators—why wouldn’t we want to plan ahead?
Planning is my umbrella term for any type of advance preparation.
At its core, planning means creating instructions to reach a specific goal or outcome.
It typically addresses what I call the 5Ws + H questions: who, what, where, when, why, and how.
Plans serve specific purposes, like optimizing resources, managing time, or improving outcomes. They help boost performance, increase success rates, and reduce uncertainty and risk. Think of plans as personal guides—not something you keep in your head, but documented references you can check periodically.
The beauty of planning is that you can reuse and adapt your plans instead of starting from scratch each time. You can refine them to improve results or make them more sustainable.
I’m going to focus on what planning is and why planning is your key to freedom as a mom.
The most important point is that planning frees up your time by creating a clear path for accomplishing your goals. When you have a plan, you know exactly what to do in the moment—no more wasting time figuring things out or fumbling around searching for items. You’ll get things right the first time, eliminating the need for do-overs.
Planning helps you set boundaries, allowing you to stop spending time and energy on unnecessary tasks. You won’t need to reinvent the wheel with each new challenge. Think of it like setting favorite contacts on your phone—one tap, and you’re connected. Similarly, plans transform your recurring tasks into “speed dial” solutions, helping you reclaim precious time in your day.
Planning aligns your efforts with what you need to accomplish and serves as a guide to keep you on track. With solid plans in place, you’ll make fewer mistakes and avoid oversights, eliminating the need for do-overs. Planning makes you more efficient and productive because your energy focuses solely on the right tasks—you won’t exhaust yourself by spending unnecessary energy on the wrong things.
When you plan effectively, you make the most of your time, energy, money, and supplies. Planning helps identify and eliminate redundancies before they occur. For example, my husband and I discovered this when we didn’t coordinate our calendars—we’d both end up making separate trips to the grocery store on the same day. Not only did this waste our time, but we’d also overspend by purchasing more groceries than needed for the week.
The last reason I’m going to share with you today is that planning frees up your mental space.
When you do all the prep work in advance, you eliminate the need for constant on-the-spot decisions. You’ll have clear direction on what needs to be done, in what order, by whom, and all other important details. As a result, these well-laid plans bring more simplicity to your day.
Planning gives you peace of mind—no more anxiety about whether or how tasks will get done. This mental clarity is essential for creating true freedom for ambitious moms.
I’ve made planning an integral part of every aspect of my life: my career, my home and family life, and even my passion projects.
Let me share how gardening, one of my hobbies, requires careful planning. At first, it might seem like planning is just moving from during the project work to before the project begins. Let me explain why that’s not true—planning actually saves me significant time and effort.
Without planning, gardening would be disastrous. I’d waste resources and make avoidable mistakes. For example, I might plant cold-weather crops in the wrong season, or worse, be ready to sow seeds only to realize I hadn’t ordered them in advance.
Space planning is crucial too. When planting time comes, there’s much to consider: lighting, spacing, companion planting strategies, and soil type. I need the right kind of space, not just any space.
What’s remarkable about garden planning is that my first year’s thorough preparation created a foundation for years to come. I didn’t have to reinvent the wheel. After that initial investment in hardcore planning, subsequent years only needed minor adjustments—whether to improve my techniques or try something new.
In this way, planning becomes essential to personal growth and self-improvement.
I hope it’s becoming clear why planning is so important. The four main benefits of planning are that it:
If you want more time, energy, mental stimulation, and optimized resources—even though it seems counterintuitive—the key is to invest time in planning now to create the freedom you desire as an ambitious mom.
Planning touches every aspect of life. I have plans for daily chores, meals, family activities, homeschooling, personal development, passion projects, and yes, even self-care and alone time. I use plans to navigate special occasions, holidays, and travel. The list goes on!
Now, this might sound overwhelming at first, but I promise: once you establish plans, you’ll discover pockets of free time in your schedule. You’ll find yourself with more energy for family time, playing with your kids, and even pursuing new challenges.
Just like I discovered, you’ll get better at planning with practice. That’s why I’m asking you to start simple: think about which areas of your life could benefit from a plan. Consider where you’d like to spend less time, energy, or money—or where you want to simplify decision-making.
For now, just make note of these areas. As you continue listening to the Solve for Mom show, you can apply what you learn about planning to these specific parts of your life.
I’d love to hear what you discover—email me at hello at solveformom.com. Tell me how planning is helping you and which areas of your life could benefit from better planning.
This is just the beginning of your planning journey, and I’m thrilled for you. I can’t wait for you to experience the power of planning firsthand.
